Authorities Crack Down on Outlawed JAAC Group in PoK Ahead of July Elections
MUZAFFARABAD — Dozens of people have been arrested in Pakistan-administered Kashmir following a government ban on the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). Authorities outlawed the group on Friday, citing serious concerns over public order and security, noting its involvement in violent clashes last year. The crackdown intensified after the JAAC announced plans for a major protest on June 9 to press for a 38-point agenda—which includes subsidized flour, lower electricity rates, and the abolition of 12 regional legislative assembly seats reserved for Kashmiris. The escalating tensions come at a critical political juncture, as officials just announced general elections are scheduled to take place this July.
