Delhi Authorities Demolish 23 Illegal Properties in Ongoing Safety Crackdown

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), in coordination with the Delhi government’s Revenue Department, intensified its citywide enforcement campaign against unauthorized constructions. In a single day of targeted operations, civic teams demolished 23 illegal properties, sealed six others, and issued three fresh demolition orders. The widespread enforcement drive follows a comprehensive review of building plan compliance and fire safety norms across multiple municipal zones.

Triggers Behind the Administrative Action

The aggressive enforcement drive is a direct administrative fallout from recent catastrophic structural and safety failures in the national capital:

  • The Hauz Rani Fire Tragedy: The localized multi-agency sweep was accelerated in the wake of a devastating fire at an illegally operated bed-and-breakfast (B&B) facility in South Delhi’s Hauz Rani/Malviya Nagar area, which resulted in 22 fatalities.
  • The Saidulajab Building Collapse: Several targeted structures included unauthorized multi-story developments in South Delhi’s Saidulajab, where a critical building collapse tragically claimed six lives.
  • Widespread Institutional Violations: Extensive inspections conducted between June 5 and June 10—covering 577 properties—exposed severe systemic violations across the city. Infractions ranged from unauthorized basements used as public libraries to hotels adding illegal top-floor rooms beyond sanctioned limits and malfunctioning emergency fire systems.

Government Mandate and Scale of the Drive

The enforcement teams executed the demolition using heavy machinery under strict security provided by the Delhi Police to prevent local resistance.

Zero-Tolerance Stance: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu have issued directives establishing a strict “zero-tolerance policy” toward structural irregularities. Since the beginning of June, specialized committees led by District Magistrates have cumulatively demolished over 120 properties and sealed 170 others.

The administration reiterated that building regulations, particularly the ground-plus-five construction ceiling and mandatory Fire No-Objection Certificates (NOCs), will be strictly enforced. Civic bodies warned residents and prospective property buyers to verify sanctioned blueprints, as further severe crackdowns and special survey actions are planned across all 12 municipal zones.
