Anganwadi Workers Storm Shimla Secretariat Demanding Gratuity and Pension
Anganwadi workers and helpers from various parts of Himachal Pradesh gathered in Shimla to stage a massive protest, surrounding the state Secretariat to demand an immediate resolution to their long-standing grievances. Sudarshana Sharma, Vice-President of the Anganwadi Workers Association, highlighted that these dedicated individuals have been fighting for their fundamental rights for decades. She pointed out that despite nearly half a century of community service, workers are denied adequate wages and allowances, receiving only nominal increases from the government that fail to provide substantial financial relief.
The association expressed deep frustration over the complete lack of post-retirement security, noting that elderly workers are routinely dismissed with nothing more than an official letter. Upon retirement, these women receive no pension, no gratuity, and no Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) benefits, leaving them financially vulnerable after up to 60 years of service. Additionally, the families of workers who pass away during their tenure receive no institutional support or financial assistance. Citing legal precedents in Kerala where workers receive gratuity following High Court intervention, the association demanded equal benefits for Himachal’s workforce, warning that they will quadruple the intensity of their agitation if the government refuses to meet their demands.
