Himachal Pradesh Launches First State-Run Women’s De-Addiction Centre Amid Ideological Push

In a pioneering step toward healthcare and social reform, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the state’s very first government-run de-addiction and rehabilitation centre specifically dedicated to women. Named ‘Nav Jeevan’, the facility has been established at Mashobra near Shimla. Managed under a secure framework to protect the identity and dignity of its occupants from social stigma, the centre offers holistic medical care, psychiatric counseling, and social reintegration services. The Chief Minister announced that a second similar facility has already been approved to come up at Tanda in Kangra district to further combat the spread of synthetic drugs like chitta.

Following the inauguration, Chief Minister Sukhu pivoted to a strong political and cultural narrative, challenging the opposition’s monopoly on religious identity and outlining his administration’s ideological stance:

Key Takeaways from the Chief Minister’s Address

  • Redefining Cultural Identity: Asserting a strong cultural footing, Sukhu stated that his party and administration represent a deep-rooted connection to the majority population, noting that Himachal Pradesh comprises 97% Hindus. He boldly claimed that they are “bigger Hindus than the BJP,” framing their approach as Hindutva rooted in universal welfare rather than political polarization.
  • Temple Redevelopment Initiatives: To back these claims, the Chief Minister highlighted active state-led efforts to protect, redevelop, and beautify historic temples across the hill state, ensuring religious heritage is preserved through institutional governance.
  • Inclusive Welfare Policy: Emphasizing a philosophy of inclusive governance, Sukhu noted that true Hinduvada believes in the progress and welfare of every section of society. He warned political detractors that no external pressure or opposition tactics would deter his government from its developmental agenda.
  • Public Appeal Against Road Blocks: Addressing recent public unrest and political agitations, the Chief Minister firmly requested citizens and organizations to refrain from blocking crucial mountain highways. He emphasized that traffic disruptions severely penalize innocent students commuting to exams and patients requiring emergency medical transfers.
