Jothimani Calls for TASMAC Exit, Stronger Liquor Regulation in Tamil Nadu
Chennai: Congress Member of Parliament S. Jothimani has urged the Tamil Nadu government to reconsider its role in operating liquor retail outlets through TASMAC, stating that running liquor shops should not be a government function. She said that while the state can effectively manage essential services like education and healthcare, the operation of alcohol retail outlets should be separated from direct government control.
Speaking on liquor policy in Tamil Nadu, she stressed the need for a clear and comprehensive reform strategy, especially amid ongoing allegations and controversies related to TASMAC operations. Jothimani also highlighted legal provisions that prohibit the sale of alcohol to individuals below 21 years of age, but noted that underage access to alcohol continues in practice and must be strictly curbed through stronger enforcement mechanisms.
She further called for a gradual reduction in the number of TASMAC outlets across the state, arguing that liquor shops contribute significantly to social issues and crime. Her remarks add to the ongoing debate over liquor regulation and state policy in Tamil Nadu, where discussions around TASMAC reform have remained politically sensitive.
