Communal Clashes Erupt in Dehradun Following BJP Worker’s Murder; Accused’s House Demolished

Massive communal and social tensions have gripped Bairagiwala village in the Vikasnagar area of Dehradun, Uttarakhand, following the brutal murder of a local BJP functionary. In response to widespread arson, stone-pelting, and protests, the state administration deployed heavy police and paramilitary reinforcements to prevent further escalation.

In a swift administrative action, the district machinery deployed bulldozers to completely raze the structures belonging to the primary accused, Imtiaz, and others, citing unauthorized construction. Local internet services have been temporarily suspended across Vikasnagar to curtail the spread of inflammatory rumors.

The Fatal Altercation Over Irrigation

According to the Dehradun Police, the incident took place on Saturday evening and originated from a localized agricultural dispute:

  • The Trigger: The victim, 44-year-old Vinod Kumar Kashyap—who served as the district social media co-convenor for the BJP’s OBC Morcha—got into a heated argument with a neighbor named Imtiaz over the diversion of water from a government irrigation pump.
  • The Armed Assault: Following the initial altercation, a mob consisting of roughly 40 armed individuals carrying lathis, hammers, iron rods, and shovels forcefully stormed Vinod’s residence.
  • Fatal Injuries: Vinod was struck on the head with a hammer, killing him on the spot. His brothers, Ashok and Rajesh, and his sister-in-law Sushma were critically injured trying to protect him and were rushed to Lehman Hospital for emergency treatment.

Family Demands Encounter Justice and Mass Inquest

The victim’s family, deeply traumatized and angry, refused to allow the initial administrative formalities to proceed without immediate, severe retaliation against the attackers.

Rajesh Kumar (Brother of the Deceased): “We will only perform the inquest (panchnama) of our brother’s body when the inquest of those four people is done. This is our only demand. And we hope the administration helps us get justice so that these criminals are taught a lesson… There were about 80 to 90 people on the spot to kill him. Overall, there were around 150 people. If our demands are not met, our entire family, along with our children, will commit self-immolation…”

Ashok Kumar (Brother of the Deceased): “My elder brother is gone, leaving such a huge responsibility of his small children behind with me… I have only one demand, that being, just as they killed my brother, the police should encounter the two main accused. I do not want anything more than this from the administration.”

Administrative and Investigative Measures

An FIR has been formally registered against 12 named individuals and 30 to 35 unidentified suspects under charges of murder and rioting. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami strongly condemned the attack, vowing that any violent mindset aiming to disrupt Uttarakhand’s communal harmony would face zero tolerance.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pramendra Singh Dobhal confirmed that six separate police teams have been formed, and coordination with neighboring Himachal Pradesh police is underway to trace the suspects who fled the village under the cover of darkness. While the physical demolition of the accused’s homes has satisfied immediate demands from protesting right-wing groups, the region remains on edge under tight security vigilance.
