Nipah Alert in Kozhikode: Three Close Contacts Test Negative as Surveillance Intensifies

In a major relief for the health administration in Kozhikode, laboratory tests for three high-risk close contacts of the confirmed Nipah virus patient have returned negative. State Minister AP Anil Kumar, who is directly monitoring the containment operations, shared updated data regarding the contact tracing matrix and public health interventions being deployed to isolate the infection.

The primary patient—a 43-year-old resident of Ramanattukara—remains under critical care on ventilator support in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Government Medical College Hospital.

Surveillance Matrix and Risk Categorization

The Health Department has expanded its monitoring protocols, bringing the active surveillance pool to exactly 100 individuals:

  • Risk Breakdown: The contact list currently includes four individuals categorized under the very high-risk bracket, 14 under high-risk, and 82 categorized as low-risk.
  • New Admissions: Four additional symptomatic individuals from the contact list were shifted to the hospital for isolation and observation on Friday, while 13 new names were added to the low-risk category.
  • Completed Field Surveys: Ground-level health workers successfully completed a meticulous house-to-house screening across all 320 households in Division 5 of Ramanattukara Municipality, the epicenter of the current case.

Medical Management and Central Review

While the patient’s vitals—including blood pressure, pulse rate, and oxygen saturation levels—have remained stable and unchanged since Thursday, his underlying condition is still critical.

Monoclonal Antibody Treatment: Following the administration of the first dose of monoclonal antibodies under Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) protocols, a specialized medical board will convene after a 48-hour observation window to evaluate his clinical progress and determine if a second dose is required.

An expert delegation from the ICMR arrived at the Government Medical College Hospital to assess the operational infrastructure of the isolation wards, review real-time response data, and coordinate interstate biosafety protocols.

Public Support and Mental Health Outreach

The district administration has activated a dedicated control room network to maintain direct communication with isolated families and manage public anxiety:

  • Active Communication: Control room staff successfully placed outbound check-in calls to all 100 tracked individuals on the contact list to monitor for early symptom development.
  • Public Inquiries: The helpline received 30 independent public inquiry calls on Friday alone, bringing the cumulative call volume since the outbreak’s confirmation to 80.
  • Psychological Help: Recognizing the immense mental toll of strict quarantine, the District Mental Health Programme extended active counseling and psychological support services to 76 individuals under surveillance.
