Unique Celebration: Mahouts and Kunki Elephants Practice Yoga at Jaldapara National Park
In a striking and unusual celebration of the 12th International Day of Yoga, Jaldapara National Park in Alipurduar, West Bengal, witnessed a harmonious session blending wildlife management with traditional wellness. Foresters, officials, and local mahouts (elephant handlers) gathered on the scenic banks of the Halong River to participate in a synchronized morning yoga routine alongside six of the park’s trained Kunki elephants.
During the unique session, the mahouts successfully demonstrated balance and flexibility by performing various yoga asanas while sitting directly on the backs of the majestic elephants. The park authorities shared visuals of the event to highlight the deep, peaceful bond shared between the forest staff and the animals, presenting a memorable message of environmental harmony on World Yoga Day.
