Putin Backs Ceasefire, Calls for Restraint Amid Iran Tensions
Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he does not see any provocations on the part of Iran and emphasised the need for restraint amid escalating regional tensions.
Speaking on the situation, Putin noted that earlier agreements on Iran’s nuclear programme had kept matters under control, but the scenario has since changed significantly. He stated that Russia maintains strong relations with both Iran and Gulf nations, placing it in a complex diplomatic position.
Putin said Moscow has urged Iranian counterparts to avoid striking neighbouring countries, but acknowledged Iran’s position that it is responding to attacks and losses. He added that Russia understands the sensitivities involved and continues to engage in dialogue with all sides.
Welcoming efforts to de-escalate, Putin expressed support for the ceasefire initiative proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, calling it a step toward long-term peace. He also reiterated that Russia stands ready to contribute to any efforts aimed at resolving the conflict and restoring stability in the region.
