Geneva Placed Under Lockdown as Thousands March to Protest Impending G7 Summit

The Swiss city of Geneva has been placed on high security alert as thousands of demonstrators converged to voice their anger against the Group of Seven (G7) wealthy nations. The massive, cross-border demonstration takes place just 24 hours before G7 world leaders—including U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron—gather for their three-day annual summit in the neighboring French resort town of Évian-les-Bains.

A coalition of over 60 trade unions, anti-capitalist collectives, environmentalists, and human rights associations organized the march. They are protesting G7 foreign and economic policies, particularly focusing on the war in the Middle East and global economic inequality.

A City Covered in Wooden Panels: Fearing a 2003 Repeat

The influx of activists has put Geneva’s business owners and cantonal authorities on edge. The defensive measures have visibly altered the city’s affluent commercial image:

  • Boarded-Up Facades: Banks, luxury watch boutiques, supermarkets, and pharmacies across the downtown area and Old Town have spent the weekend boarding up their storefronts with thick wooden panels.
  • The Ghost of 2003: The preemptive steps are driven by the memory of the 2003 G8 summit in Evian, when anti-globalization riots spilled over the French border into Geneva, causing millions of dollars in property damage through widespread vandalism and looting.
  • Massive Troop Deployments: To prevent a recurrence of past riots, the Swiss government has deployed over 4,000 army personnel to assist regional police. Cantonal law enforcement has been authorized to use tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets to proactively disperse unpermitted blockades, particularly around critical railway corridors.

Drastic Travel Restrictions and Border Closures

Because most G7 heads of state are landing at Geneva Airport before traveling across the border to France, a massive security perimeter has disrupted daily life:

  • Schengen Suspended: Switzerland has temporarily suspended Schengen free-movement rules. Out of the 35 roadway border crossings connecting Geneva Canton to France, 28 have been completely closed with physical security fences. Only seven major checkpoints remain open under strict identity verification.
  • Protest Relocation: Due to stringent bans enforced by French police, the “No-G7” coalition was forced to abandon plans for a counter-summit in the French border town of Annemasse. Instead, the Swiss judiciary permitted a highly monitored, circuitous march route strictly confined to the right bank of Geneva, far removed from the city’s high-end commercial core.

Focus of Public Anger

While traditional anti-globalization sentiments remain prominent, organizers note that the current geopolitical climate has intensified public anger:

The Geopolitical Context: This year’s summit follows the outbreak of the war involving the U.S. and Israel against Iran. Demonstrators are expressing intense frustration with G7 leadership regarding military escalations, even as back-channel diplomatic talks in France attempt to broker an emergency peace deal to reopen the blockaded Strait of Hormuz.

Activists maintained that the policies of the world’s leading industrialized nations are actively putting the planet and global peace in jeopardy. While tensions remained high and a small group of masked youths gathered near the front of the procession, the primary march concluded under heavy police surveillance without turning into the widespread rioting seen in previous decades.
