Kashmiris protest outside Pakistani Mission in UK as situation in Pakistan occupied Kashmir deteriorates.

The situation in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) has drastically deteriorated, sparking widespread outrage and triggering protests by members of the Kashmiri diaspora outside Pakistani diplomatic missions in the United Kingdom, including the consulate in Bradford.

Demonstrators, human rights activists, and community representatives gathered to fiercely condemn what they term severe human rights violations, an heavy-handed security crackdown, and the stifling of civil liberties by Pakistani authorities back home.

Why the Situation in PoK Has Escalated

The latest wave of unrest, which has left at least 11 people dead and over 70 injured in regions like Rawalakot, stems from deep-rooted economic and political grievances:

  • The JAAC Ban and Crackdown: Tensions hit a boiling point after the regional administration declared the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC)—a prominent civil society alliance—a proscribed “terrorist” organization under anti-terrorism laws. This was followed by a aggressive security deployment, the sealing of JAAC offices, and mass arrests of activists.
  • The “Refugee Seats” Controversy: A core trigger for the upcoming June elections is the controversial reservation of 12 seats in the 45-member legislative assembly for refugees who live outside Kashmir in other parts of Pakistan. Local residents argue this system allows Islamabad to manipulate local governance and dilute genuine regional representation.
  • Economic Exploitation and Outages: For the past two years, the JAAC has mobilized massive protests against spiraling inflation, exorbitant flour prices, severe load-shedding, and electricity shortages, accusing Islamabad of exploiting the region’s natural hydro resources without giving back to the local population.
  • Information Blackout: To curb the demonstrations ahead of a planned region-wide shutdown, authorities enforced a complete mobile internet and communications lockdown, paralyzing daily life and triggering international concern.

International Alarm and Backlash in the UK

The diaspora protests in the UK coincide with growing political and diplomatic pressure on Islamabad over its handling of the crisis:

UK Parliamentary Intervention: An All-Party Parliamentary Group on Kashmir, led by Bradford East MP Imran Hussain and signed by nearly 30 British MPs, officially moved the UK Foreign Office to intervene diplomatically. The group expressed grave concern over the communications blackout, the stalling of dialogue, and the arbitrary arrest of activists, including British nationals visiting the region.

Amid mounting volatility, foreign governments—including the UK, Canada, and Australia—have drastically updated their travel advisories for PoK, warning citizens to steer clear of the region due to the risk of sudden violent clashes and systemic security blockades.
