Apple Unveils macOS 27 ‘Golden Gate’ with Liquid Glass Refinements and Next-Gen Siri AI

At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2026), Apple officially announced the next major iteration of its desktop operating system: macOS 27, named “Golden Gate.” Presented by Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, the update focuses heavily on refining user interface elements, introducing an entirely rebuilt system search architecture, and deeply embedding the next generation of Apple Intelligence. Notably, Golden Gate marks a historic transition as the first macOS version to drop support for Intel-based Macs entirely, running exclusively on Apple silicon.

Redefining the ‘Liquid Glass’ Interface

Following user feedback regarding the translucent design language introduced in macOS Tahoe, Apple has introduced several aesthetic refinements and customization features:

  • Global Transparency Slider: Users can now manually adjust the opacity of the Liquid Glass interface via a system-wide slider in System Settings, ranging from completely clear to fully tinted.
  • Consistent Window Layouts: Reverting a controversial change, window corner radiuses have been unified across all applications—even those that haven’t been actively updated by developers.
  • Edge-to-Edge Elements: Sidebars now stretch seamlessly to the very edge of app windows with refraction continuing underneath, while sidebar icons reincorporate distinct colors for easier navigation.

Reengineered Search and ‘Siri AI’ Integration

The core plumbing behind the operating system’s search capabilities has been completely rearchitected to process data locally on the device’s hardware:

  • Instant Indexing: A new system index instantly processes text, images, and data the moment they are received or captured, eliminating delays when searching for recently created files in Spotlight, Mail, or Photos.
  • Siri AI with On-Screen Awareness: Powered by a bold new privacy-focused architecture, the revamped Siri AI features personal context and on-screen awareness.
  • Contextual Shortcuts: Spotlight now utilizes a unified “Search or Ask” interface. Users can select multiple files in Finder to ask Siri to compare them, use a dedicated visual intelligence keyboard shortcut to get answers about specific portions of the screen, or right-click any window to query Siri directly.

Underlying Performance and System Adjustments

Beneath the visual adjustments, a reworked CPU scheduler brings substantial speed optimizations across daily tasks:

  • Speed Upgrades: System operations see noticeable performance boosts, including apps opening up to 30% faster, AirDrop transferring up to 80% faster, and file transfers to external drives running up to five times quicker.
  • System Pull-to-Refresh: Bringing consistency with iOS and iPadOS, a pull-to-refresh feature has been introduced to Mac apps like Safari.
  • Deprecated Features: macOS 27 drops support for the legacy Apple Filing Protocol (AFP), effectively ending Time Machine backup functionality to older AirPort Time Capsule routers. It will also be the final version of macOS to include full Rosetta 2 functionality.

Hardware Compatibility: macOS Golden Gate is compatible with all Mac models powered by Apple silicon (M1 chips or later, alongside the A18 Pro-powered MacBook Neo), officially cutting off remaining Intel-based models like the 2019 Mac Pro and 2020 iMac.
