Bolton Flays US-Iran Accord, Warning of Flawed Nuclear Concessions

Former US National Security Advisor John Bolton has launched a blistering critique against the recently signed US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Speaking in an interview, Bolton labeled the deal as exceptionally advantageous to Tehran, warning that it repeats the exact same structural errors that derailed past nuclear negotiations with the Iranian regime. He argued that the White House has extended substantial economic and strategic concessions to Iran without securing concrete, unconditional guarantees for international shipping.

Central to Bolton’s criticism is the unresolved status of the Strait of Hormuz. He pointed out that the current framework completely fails to bar Iran from imposing localized transit tolls or placing arbitrary restrictions on international maritime traffic through the vital naval corridor. According to Bolton, President Donald Trump rushed into the deal primarily out of domestic economic anxiety, aiming to drive down American gasoline prices by injecting Gulf oil back into global markets, regardless of the long-term geopolitical costs.

Bolton cautioned that the immediate sanctions relief and renewed oil revenues will not benefit the Iranian public. Instead, he predicted Tehran will funnel the incoming wealth straight into rebuilding its military infrastructure, funding regional proxy networks, and expanding its nuclear program. Drawing comparisons to historical negotiations with both Iran and North Korea, Bolton asserted that these rogue states habitually demand upfront economic windfalls in exchange for vague, downstream nuclear limitations that they never actually implement. While he believes the foundational alliance between the US and Israel will weather the friction caused by the deal, Bolton urged Washington to rigorously enforce compliance during the upcoming 60-day negotiation period, emphasizing that unimpeded passage through the Strait of Hormuz must remain the ultimate test of Iran’s commitment.
